Why Advocacy?
Although giftedness is officially recognized by the education system in BC, a lack of accurate understanding by education and medical professionals continues to affect children in daily life. A decline in dedicated funding has led to fewer students being identified and less support. The four pillars of a suitable education system for gifted learners are depth, breadth, pace and learning environment. Of these, the learning environment is the most important. Indeed, it is the key factor for a learner with special needs because, in an appropriate learning environment, students are accepted and celebrated for who they are.
Provincial Government
Appropriate education and attention to the social-emotional need are important to the health and well-being of all children. At the provincial level, we seek systemic supports including available programs and adaptations to meet educational needs, teacher training, and gifted identification. The GCABC communicates with the BC Provincial government through participation in Ministry reviews and submission of written reports.

Public Education and Outreach
Some of the roadblocks gifted people encounter when dealing with professionals stem from misunderstanding and myths. Education and outreach initiatives such as written articles and informational media promote understanding of gifted needs.
School Districts
GCABC has recently expanded its scope in advocacy to include school districts. We are also able to provide information to support parents in advocating for their own children at the school level.
