Webinar: Dr. Matt Zakreski, “CAN we all just get along?”, Wednesday, May 8, 2024, 6:30 pm, online
Gifted and neurodivergent people can struggle to make and keep social connections. These challenges stem from both biological (developmental asynchrony) and behavioral (intensity, cognitive rigidity) aspects. This presentation will explore the root causes behind social challenges in neurodivergent students and then explore some strategies to build the skills necessary to sustain healthy social relationships. Because a gifted person’s skills can get them many opportunities, but they will need to have social skills to keep those chances. Please register via https://gc3saobc.wildapricot.org/event-5687995 . This event is free for GCABC Members in good standing, $15 for non-members.

Tuesday, April 16, 2024, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., Choice School for Gifted Children, Richmond and Thursday, April 18, 2024, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., Westview Secondary School Library, Maple Ridge. These events were co-presented by the Lower Mainland Gifted Contacts and the GCABC, and featured Dr. Kristi Lauridsen discussing the Possibilities for Learning resources.
- Parents as Partners: Experiences, Needs and Collaborations for Gifted Parents in BC. Thursday, February 23, 2023 7:00-8:30 pm. Winslow Centre, Gallery Room, 1100 Winslow Avenue, Coquitlam. This event was co-presented by the Lower Mainland Gifted Contacts and the GCABC, and presented the results of the 2022 parent survey conducted by GCABC and Dr. Debbie Clelland.
- Webinar: You Don’t Need to be a “Genius” to Understand Gifted Individuals – Saturday, September 17, 2022, 9:00-11:00 am on Zoom. In this session, Dr. Matthew Zakreski presented psycho-educational data on the differences between the gifted brain and the neurotypical brain, which can inform discussions on treatment, education, diagnosis, and day-to-day living.
- Webinar: Riding Out the Storm – Managing Emotional Intensity in Gifted Students – Saturday, June 18, 2022, 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Zoom. In this session, Dr. Matthew Zakreski focused on the psychology and neuroscience behind emotional intensity and gave concrete, accessible techniques that allow for the development of self-regulation skills.
- Webinar: The Disability Tax Credit – Tuesday, February 22, 2022, 7:00 – 8:00 pm on Zoom. In this session, T.J. Firenze of DTCAdvocates discussed the Disability Tax Credit, which may apply to families with twice- and multi-exceptional children, and provide guidance on how families can navigate the sometimes complicated application process.

In conjunction with the AGM, Registered Clinical Counsellor Debbie Clelland from Adler University will give a presentation on the topic “Keeping communication lines open with your gifted/2e children and teens”.
