New Important GCABC Tools for Parents

We now have an answer to the much-asked question: “Who is experienced with doing assessments for gifted children in BC?”

The Gifted Children’s Association of British Columbia is pleased to announce that we have new and valuable tools on our website to help families with gifted children with finding the right support.

During spring 2019, the GCABC Communication & Resources Committee conducted a survey among mental health professionals in BC. The aim was to assist parents in BC with accessing professionals with experience working with gifted children and adults.

The survey resulted in a BC roadmap for services and support and directory for gifted adults and children. The new GCABC page Gifted Navigation: Finding Support for Your Gifted Child describes a roadmap with information for families about how different professionals can support and help your gifted child. It also contains suggestions for an order to approach matters that will help you build a collaborative relationship with school professionals.

The GCABC Directory of Professionals is another new GCABC resource where you can find names and addresses in BC of professionals who can support your children with their academic situation or mental health (listed according to geographical area). Currently, the directory includes 34 clinical counsellors and registered psychologists who have experience working with gifted families.  It also lets you know who does psycho-educational assessments, and who offers online/distance sessions for therapy.

The GCABC would like to thank the following individuals who made major contributions to conducting this survey and making this very valuable information available:

  • Students completing their service learning projects in Master’s and PsyD degrees at Adler University: Alicia Dobrzanski, Alessia Lista and Alicia Bush
  • Communication & Resources Committee members Debbie Clelland and Betty-Jo Gillett
  • GCABC Board Member Maureen McDermid
